Education Standards

In order to provide the necessary quality of prosthetics and orthotics services it is important that the personnel providing them has an adequate level of education and training.

ISPO/WHO Guidelines for Training Personnel for Prosthetics and Orthotics Services

ISPO has, in close collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), developed detailed education and training guidelines for the full professional prosthetist/orthotist (ISPO Category I), the orthopaedic technologist (ISPO Category II) and the orthopaedic technician/benchworker (ISPO Category III). The philosophy and curricula are widely accepted by most international governmental and non-governmental agencies in the field.

Introduction of the new P&O Education Standards

These new Education standards are expected to more clearly define the education required across the prosthetics and orthotics spectrum; and introduces a new reporting format to improve the timeliness, consistency, and reliability of how programmes are evaluated. Moreover, the Standards are designed to complement and strengthen the aspirations of the WHO and ISPO in the new document setting standards in prosthetic and orthotic service provision. 

ISPO expects to fully implement the new Standards and evaluation process in 2018.
