WHO Standards for P&O

WHO, in collaboration with ISPO and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), developed the WHO Standards for Prosthetics and Orthotics  accompanied by an implementation manual to support countries in developing or improving high-quality, affordable prosthetics and orthotics services. The standards are people-centred and aim to ensure that everyone in need has access to prostheses and orthoses worldwide.

 

WHO’s report addresses all 4 areas of the health system to ensure an integrated approach to and implementation of the standards:

  • Policy: providing an adequate framework to ensure access & affordability
  • Products: establishing a national list of priority prosthetic & orthotic products focusing on awareness, development & procurement of devices
  • Personnel: gaining professional recognition & providing high-quality training
  • Provision of Services: planning, implementing, monitoring & evaluating of services

WHO’s implementation manual focuses on the practical details and describes the “what, why, how, who and when” behind the standards to assist policy-makers and health care program managers in planning, implementing and managing the prosthetics and orthotics services in their country.
