The XVI Russian National Congress “People & Health” held in St Petersburg, Russia on 26-28 October 2011 gathered guests from the region (Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan) but also from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Slovakia, Spain, UK, China, and the United States. The Congress program featured a number of Prosthetics and Orthotics events including:
- Scientific-Practical Conferences on "Therapeutic Problems with the Elderly"; diseases and injuries of vertebral column, Diabetic Foot and Shoe-Making Technologies, Medical-Social Examination, Pediatric Trauma Care;
- Courses for Outpatient and Family Physicians “Cardiology”, “Opthalmology”, “Neurology and Psychoneurology”, “Rheumatology”, and "Diabetic Foot”;
- Enlarged Meeting of the Russian ISPO NMS and the All-Russian Prosthetists-Orthopedists Guild;
- Russian-Finnish Seminar "Technical rehabilitation facilities providing accessible home and independent living for disabled and elderly people";
- Symposium "Current advances in low extremity prosthetics with energy storing feet";
- Discussion Area on “Actual issues of traumatology and orthopedics”.
A significant number of foreign speakers participated in this year’s congress events like the course on vertebral column diseases and the Spanish-Russian conference on diabetic foot. These international conferences attracted about 200 specialists from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Ukraine and generated live discussion on the guidelines of evaluation and treatment of these pathologies.
An exhibition showcasing the latest orthopedic technologies and products, a fair of products made by disabled people and a job fair for disabled persons were taking place in parallel. More than 200 free medical consultations for the citizens were given at the congress by the leading Saint Petersburg physicians in ophthalmology, orthopedics, cardiology, and neurology.
