Biennium report 2023

BIENNIUM REPORT 2021-2023 18 ISPO’s journal, Prosthetics and Orthotics International (POI), is one of the major scientific publications in the field of prosthetics and orthotics. This international, multidisciplinary journal is targeted at all professionals who have an interest in the medical, clinical, rehabilitation, technical, educational, and research aspects of prosthetics, orthotics, and rehabilitation engineering, as well as related topics. Published six times a year by Wolters Kluwer, POI contains review articles, original research reports, case studies and case series, clinical and technical notes, and book reviews pertinent to prosthetics, orthotics, and rehabilitation engineering practices. Special issues on specific topics of interest to the journal’s readership, information about ISPO activities, and the reports of ISPO consensus conferences and working groups are also published along with the abstracts of ISPO World Congresses. “Prosthetics and Orthotics International (POI)” is essential to the growth and health of ISPO. The POI team works every day to ensure that we give voice to the depth and breadth of ideas and research findings that span our global organization. To give one an appreciation of the scale of the work of POI, our team generated and tracked 11,669 emails with authors in 2022 and we invited 1,229 external reviewers for 201 submissions made from 38 different countries. POI is truly an international community effort. POI publishes all accepted and completed articles “Online First” in advance of an assigned issue, with a digital object identifier (DOI) number for referencing and PubMed indexing. While it takes some time for each manuscript to work through the process, a new POI article is published on average every 3.2 days. In 2022 POI had a rejection rate of 36%, in line with previous years. We work each day to ensure that the publication’s content is of high quality and that requires the ongoing diligence and dedication of the entire team: the authors, editors and publishers that produce the journal every two months. The last impact score published for POI was 1.512, our second highest impact factor in many years and well above the average of the Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic journal peer groups. This is especially noteworthy given a technical change in calculation method this year resulted in larger decreases that were common across a large number of smaller Journals.
