ISPO Partner ISWP Continues Support for the Wheelchair Sector Worldwide

The International Society of Wheelchair Professionals (ISWP) is working to improve the quality of wheelchairs and services to individuals worldwide.  Activities include:


  • A special ISWP issue of African Journal of Disability related to wheelchairs in less-resourced settings published in September 2017.
  •  "Design Considerations for Wheelchairs Used in Adverse Conditions" was published to guide design considerations for wheelchairs used in adverse environments
  • A meeting was held with ISPO, ISPRM, WCPT, WFOT and WHO representatives ito integrate wheelchair service curricula in university and professional training programs.
  • Wheelchair Service Provider credential pilots in English and Spanish took place with 79 participants. The credential will recognize wheelchair service providers and trainers.
  • E-mentoring pilots for intermediate service providers took place in English and Spanish, with 18 participants across two pilots. A third phase is in progress now; a comprehensive intervention is planned for Q2 2018.
  • The  ISWP Basic test of wheelchair service is available in 14 languages; 2,200 individuals have taken the test.
  • The ISWP Intermediate test is available in English and Spanish; 300 individuals have taken the knowledge component of the test.
  • The  Wheelchair International Network (WIN) was launched in late 2017. The one-of-a-kind learning management platform facilitates training and certification for wheelchair service professionals, training organizations and manufacturers.
  • Product testing equipment was built to test casters, rolling resistance and corrosion, with a focus on wheelchairs used in less-resourced environments.
  • New  ISWP videos raise awareness of the need for appropriate wheelchairs and services.
  • ISWP affiliates project pilots were completed in Romania and Philippines. Motivation Romania and the Philippine Society of Wheelchair Professionals conducted wheelchair needs assessments and developed strategic plans for country-specific wheelchair service provision.
