The National Centre for Prosthetics and Orthotics at La Trobe University offers the only course of this type in Australia and New Zealand. It is highly regarded internationally and accredited as a Category 1 course by the International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics.
The combined BHS/MCPO course is undertaken on campus over four years. In first year, undergraduate students undertake an interdisciplinary common year in subjects across the Faculty of Health Sciences. From the second year of study the students begin to develop skills specific to the discipline. The final year of the program includes extended professional clinical placements around Australia and internationally, as well as specialised clinical school study that takes place within large local health service networks. Students combine their undergraduate training in health sciences with specialised Masters-level training in prosthetics and orthotics in the four year program.
The MCPO postgraduate coursework program is for students with a relevant first degree and offers a professional qualification in prosthetics and orthotics. This is undertaken over a two year period in parallel with the final two years of the undergraduate program.
