Launched in 2017, the National Health Workforce Accounts (NHWA) has become a vital tool for strengthening health workforce data and informing evidence-based policy. With participation from 90% of WHO Member States, NHWA has improved data quality, highlighted critical issues like workforce shortages, migration, and gender disparities, and supported key global reports including the State of the World’s Nursing and Midwifery. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and new global health initiatives, NHWA has been revised to better address emerging data needs while maintaining its core principles of systems strengthening, multi-sectoral collaboration, and progressive implementation. This updated version further supports countries in building resilient health systems and ensuring universal health coverage.
