The Afghan Diploma for Prosthetics and Orthotics is sponsored and run by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It is a three-year programme. Student intake is done once in three years and students are drawn from all over Afghanistan (male and female), from NGOs of interest in prosthetics and orthotics; priority is given to Persons With Disabilities who are already actively engaged in physical rehabilitation activities, on-job trained and then formally trained to attain a Diploma. The ratio of males to females is almost 1:1. The programme begins with Common Trunk subjects such as Islamyat (Islamic Studies), First Aid, Communication skills, Mathematics and Mechanics then after three to six months of these common trunk, P&O sciences proper are taught along side Human Anatomy, Pathology, Biomechanics, Material Science, Clinical Leadership and patient work.
