Education Research Fund 2026: call for proposals open

Background

Following the Global Educators Meeting (GEM) in 2018, a group of dedicated individuals serving as the Ongoing Activities Subcommittee of the GEM Subcommittee sought to create a space for collaborative educational activities to occur between GEM meetings.  These individuals sought to connect prosthetics and orthotics (P&O) educators from around the globe through efforts to promote scholarship and progress in P&O education.  During the GEM 2022, facilitators and researchers conducted a series of focus group meetings to identify priorities for education research and the resources faculty might need to participate in such research.  Analysis of these discussions resulted in a prioritization survey, which was disseminated to educators around the globe.  Results from this survey were shared with attendees at the 2023 ISPO World Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, where individuals from a variety of backgrounds discussed the findings.  One of the findings of the focus group, survey, and discussions was the need for financial support for discipline-based education research in P&O.

A full account of this effort was published in Prosthetics and Orthotics International in 2024.  In order to promote education research in the profession, generous donations from the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education, the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics, and the School of Health Professions at Baylor College of Medicine resulted in the Education Research Fund, which sought proposals prior to the 2024 GEM.  The results of this first funding effort were shared at the GEM 2026.

A second round of donations from GEM proceeds, the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics, and Pedorthics, and Dan Blocka with the support of his company Boundless Biomedical Bracing, are supporting this second round of funding in 2026.

Mission of the Fund

The mission of the ISPO Education Research Fund is to support P&O program faculty in conducting collaborative education research, which will support evidence-based approaches to P&O education and training.
